British Sign Language
British Sign Language (BSL) is the first or preferred language of over 87,000 deaf people in the UK. By studying BSL you are part of journey to a more communicative and accessible world, supported by a team of BSL users from all walks of life no matter your skills, knowledge, or background.
I had hoped to learn how to be able to communicate in BSL, even if it was only the basics, but I have learned so much more. The benefit for me now, is a greater understanding, and the ability to be able to communicate with a Deaf person, rather than feeling I was being rude, by not knowing how to ask , or answer questions if I met then in, or out of work.
Linda Caton, British Sign Language Intermediate 2 Student
Future roles of those that continue in the career path of BSL can include:
- working alongside Deaf BSL users in the workplace
- becoming a BSL/English Interpreter
Learning BSL will not only give you the opportunity to learn a beautiful, visual language, but it will also have a positive effect on your interpersonal, communication and memory skills as well as making it easier for learning any future languages.
