I had hoped to learn how to be able to communicate in BSL, even if it was only the basics, but I have learned so much more. The benefit for me now, is a greater understanding, and the ability to be able to communicate with a Deaf person, rather than feeling I was being rude, by not knowing how to ask , or answer questions if I met then in, or out of work.
