I am a Reader in Visual Culture and Theory (UHI) and my research on ‘Word and Image’, problematizes codes of representation.   My early research focused on the work of the American artist Joseph Cornell and is acknowledged as an outstanding contribution to Cornell studies; it has been reprinted numerous times and translated into several languages including Japanese.

I am also the Principal Investigator in a European network, Hands Across the Sea (https://handsacrosstheseacom.wordpress.com), an Co-Investigator for SEA- EU and affiliate to the Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design Network. I also act as an invited expert on national review panels for European journals, and for major collections and museum installations in the United States.

About Me: My BBC Omnibus documentary on Cornell was screened in 1991 and my film on Susan Sontag in 2003 for The Centre for Surrealism and Its Legacies. My current research on visual culture in the Gàidhealtachd extends to an interest in ‘place’, ‘mutations from below’ and transnational representations.
