A mature students guide to HNs
Learn how our HN courses can help you gain a powerful qualification that can stay with you for life.
If you’re over 25 and considering returning to education, you’re not alone.
Every year, adults take the step back into learning to open new doors, build confidence, or move into a new career. One of the most flexible and practical ways to do this is an HN. These work focused qualifications are designed to give you the knowledge and hands‑on experience you need to progress in your chosen field. There are two types of HN:
- HNCs (Higher National Certificates) - these can be the equivalent to year 1 of a degree and usually last one year full‑time
- HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) - these can be the equivalent to year 2 of a degree lasting 2 years if taken full-time
These courses sit at higher‑education level and can lead directly into employment or further study.
Why Choose an HN qualification?
- Buildability - Studying an HN helps you gain practical, real-world skills that boost your confidence from day one. As you progress, you’ll build a strong foundation of knowledge that prepares you for work or further study. Each module is designed to help you grow step by step so you can see your skills develop as you learn.
- Flexibility - Many HN courses offer full and part‑time study options, giving you the freedom to fit learning around your life. Whether you’re working, caring for family or juggling both, you won’t have to choose between your commitments and your education. HNs make it easier to balance your studies with everything else that matters to you.
- Practicality – HN qualifications are created with industry input so you learn skills that employers are looking for right now. You’ll still spend time on theory and however you will also spend time time applying your learning to real situations. This practical approach helps you feel more prepared and more confident when stepping into the workplace.
- Supportive - With dedicated study support, you’ll never feel like you’re learning alone. Whether you need advice with coursework, help settling into student life or someone to talk to, you’ll have support every step of the way. HNs are designed to help you succeed both academically and personally.
