What is Training Principles for Exercise?

Sports and Fitness Curriculum Team Leader, Laura, explains what makes our Training Principles for Exercise a vital module in our new HNC Physical Activity and Health

Training Principles for Exercise is a mandatory module within our NEW HNC Physical Activity and Health and works together with other mandatory units particularly Exercise Practitioner, by providing the screening, testing and planning foundation that supports practical delivery.

In other words, this module is a key “piece of the puzzle” helping you move from enjoying fitness to thinking like a professional which is essential for starting a career in the health and fitness industry.

Key Stats

The UK Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines recommend adults achieve at least 150 minutes of moderate activity (or 75 minutes vigorous) per week, plus muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days per week.

ukactive’s market reporting shows the UK health and fitness sector reached 11.5 million members, across 5,607 clubs, generating £5.7bn revenue, with 600+ million visits in 2024.

Why is this important?

Training Principles for Exercise gives you the “planning brain” behind safe, effective exercise programming. It covers the end-to-end process of working with clients and groups using evidence-based principles such as FITT, specificity, progressive overload, individuality and recovery.

Many people can “pick exercises”; fewer can justify and tailor a programme using screening data, testing outcomes, client goals and evidence-based principles. This module develops that professional skillset which is crucial for employability and for client safety and results.

Graduates who can consult, assess and programme effectively can support local people to become more active, improve fitness and confidence, and reduce risk by prescribing exercise appropriately. It also supports inclusive practice by building awareness of client needs, motivations, and safe progression.

How will you learn during your studies?

You will develop the knowledge and practical competence through applied tasks that mirror real industry practice, this includes:

  • Building an exercise library covering key movement patterns, training methods, cardiovascular machines and flexibility/mobility methods.
  • Planning gym-based inductions for an individual and a small group where you will select exercises from their library and specify key training variables.
  • Conducting consultation and applying fitness/health assessments before administering and analysing assessments, recording results accurately, and comparing findings to normative data to inform programming decisions.
  • Designing an eight-week programme including health and skill related components, justifying the use of training principles and evaluating expected adaptations.
  • Planning two 45-minute group sessions across different environments including warm-up, main content and cool-down, and incorporate a balanced selection of training elements alongside progressions/adaptations and safe session structure.

The opportunity for progression?

The module supports the professional development pathway within the physical activity and health industry and is designed to build industry-relevant competence for working with both individuals and groups.
