Stories with Impact: Sustainable Style – Greener Hairdressing

Education can be a powerful catalyst for change. Through Sustainable Style, a group of Hairdressing students became the driving force behind a more sustainable salon environment, influencing practices, engaging clients and creating a lasting legacy.

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of modern industry, and the hairdressing sector is no exception. From reducing waste and conserving resources to encouraging more responsible choices, businesses across the profession are being challenged to consider their environmental impact.

For a group of Hairdressing Foundation (SCQF Level 5) students, these challenges presented an opportunity. Rather than simply learning about sustainability, they wanted to explore how they could actively contribute to positive change during their studies and future careers.

The result was Sustainable Style, a student-led initiative funded through the Rebel Fund that transformed our training salons into a model of more sustainable practice, while encouraging clients and the wider community to think differently about environmental responsibility. From the start, students took ownership of the project, researching industry challenges, identifying opportunities for improvement and developing practical solutions that could make a real difference.

Working together, they introduced refill stations to reduce packaging waste, improved recycling systems and promoted charitable hair recycling initiatives. They also installed eco-efficient taps to help reduce water consumption within the salon, demonstrating how small changes in everyday practice can contribute to wider environmental goals.

Students recognised that lasting change also depends on education. To support this, they created sustainability resources, including short videos, practical advice and information about environmentally responsible salon practices. Accessible through QR codes displayed throughout the salon, these student-created resources transformed everyday appointments into opportunities for learning and conversation.

Through conversations with clients, awareness-raising activities and digital content, they encouraged others to consider how small changes can contribute to wider environmental responsibility. This created a ripple effect that reached beyond the college, promoting more sustainable thinking within the wider community.

What started as an idea from one group of students has created a foundation that others can continue to develop and enhance. The sustainable practices, resources and learning opportunities they introduced have become embedded within the salon environment, helping to ensure environmental responsibility remains part of the student experience for future cohorts.

The value of Sustainable Style is not simply that it reduced waste or introduced new ways of working. It is that it demonstrated the role students can play in driving meaningful change. By combining education, environmental responsibility and practical action, our students showed that sustainability is not something that happens to an industry. It is something that can be shaped by the people entering it.

Through Sustainable Style, students moved beyond learning about sustainable practice and became active contributors to it. Their ideas influenced the way our salon operates, encouraged conversations with clients and challenged others to think differently about their environmental impact. In doing so, they showed that meaningful change often starts with people who are willing to ask questions, take ownership and lead by example.
