Stories with Impact: Digital Essentials for Careers
Launched in 2024, our Digital Essentials for Carers course was designed in collaboration with the Digital Health Initiative (DHI). Offering a free, flexible programme it’s aim is to to empower both paid and unpaid carers with vital digital skills which boost confidence, open doors, and transform lives.
How the Course Was Created
The course content and structure were shaped by real conversations with people working in the sector, from carers and support organisations to social care providers. Through interviews, case studies, and online discussion groups, it was noted that the learning experience needed to feel welcoming and unintimidating. Many carers shared that they hadn’t taken part in formal education for quite some time, so it was important to create something that felt easy to engage with and supportive from the start.
To achieve this, the course is built around micro-credentials, four bite-sized, self-contained units that carers can complete at their own pace, in any order. Each unit includes interactive elements like quizzes, videos, case studies, and expert insights. The units are:
- A brief history of digital technologies in health and social care
- Your personal information and how it’s used
- Digital care: The Moray context
- Developing skills and confidence in Digital Care
A Model for Inclusive Education
One of our greatest strengths as an institution is our ability to deliver high-quality online learning. By embracing emerging technologies and engaging formats that reflect the diverse skills and experiences of carers, this course allows for personal and skills development. Its modular design is helpful to those managing busy schedules, particularly in remote or rural areas and the opportunities for peer interaction and sharing experiences help reduce feelings of isolation. In addition, carers receive one-to-one support from experienced curriculum staff throughout their learning journey
We also recognise the challenges of reaching unpaid carers which is why we’ve built strong relationships with organisations like Quarriers, Moray Carers, and DWP work coaches to ensure the course reaches those who need it most.
Why This Course Matters
By encouraging carers to connect and share experiences, our Digital Essentials for Carers course helps reduce isolation and build a supportive learning community. More importantly, it equips carers with the skills and confidence to thrive in a digital world.
Looking Ahead
As with all our provision, the course will continue to evolve based on feedback and changing needs. Looking to the future, we’re focusing on:
- Reaching more unpaid carers, who are often underrepresented in education
- Strengthening support to reflect new technologies and changing learner preferences
- Exploring ways to adapt and deliver the course in other sectors particularly those affected by digital transformation and the shift to green energy.
