Future Chef 2015 comes to Moray College UHI

Yesterday (Wednesday 21st January 2015) Moray College UHI was privileged in holding the second round of the Springboard Future Chef 2015. This competition was open for young people aged 12-16 who are passionate about cooking.

The three students who reached this stage were Callum Reaich from Moray College UHI (aged 16), Kate Leonard from Elgin High School (aged 14) and Elliot Sabor from Elgin Academy (aged 14).  In this round they had 90 minutes to produce 2 portions of a hot main meal and 2 portions of a hot or cold dessert with their budget of £7.

Craig Wilson, Hospitality Lecturer from Moray College UHI was given the hard task of judging the work once the 90 minutes had ended.  Before he announced the winner, Craig said it “was really hard to call”, he was really happy with each dish and praised the standard.  On speaking to each of the entrants in turn, he said Elliott was brave choosing a vegetarian menu and he particularly enjoyed the roulade.  For Kate he spoke of her skill at pasta making and her great Panna Cotta and for Callum he said the scallops were cooked well and the strong flavour of the lentils worked well.

The students were marked in 4 different areas

  1. Workmanship
  2. Creativity and Presentation
  3. Taste and Flavours
  4. Balance of Menu

After some deliberation Craig announced the results.  The scores were very close with only 1 point between first and second and only 4 points between second and third place.  Callum Reaich was the winner with 89 points, Elliot Sabor in second place with 88 points and Kate Leonard in third place with 84 points.

Graeme Strachan , Youth Programmes Manager from Springboard was delighted with this round of the competition and is looking forward to the North of Scotland Regional Final to be held on Tuesday 24th February 2015 in Inverness.
