Abi’s ‘Moment to Shine’

A group of students and staff from Moray College UHI are making their way to Grantown on Monday, June 11th to support Abi O’Grady, one of the 8,000 Olympic Torch Bearers, as she carries the Olympic Flame through the town.

Abi has been a Skills for Life student at the college for the past two years. Earlier this year Abi was nominated to be an Olympic torch bearer because of her tremendous achievements in the sport of Kickboxing. 19 year old Abi is on the autistic spectrum, but competes against others with no disability. Abi took up kickboxing when she was 11 and through sheer determination and hard work has risen to black belt level and indeed has just received her black belt second dan, an amazing feat for anyone.

Last November Abi joined the Scottish team at a World Martial Kombat Federation’s international event in Sicily at which she was presented with a special award in recognition of her achievements. This coming October Abi will proudly attend the College’s Graduation and Awards ceremony, having achieved her course. This has, indeed, been Abi’s year to shine.
