Blog: Kirstie Spark, Electrical Installation student

Did you know that women make up around 14% of the workforce in Construction? We spoke to Kirstie, an SVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation student and apprentice about her experience with us and her plans for the future.

Hi Kirstie, can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

Hi, I'm Kristie and I am studying the SVQ Electrical Installation Level 3 on block release.

Did you consider other universities or colleges when you were deciding to study?

No, the SVQ Electrical Installation is the only course that is applicable for apprentice electricians in Scotland, as an apprentice the SECTT decide where you study.

How would you describe the teaching and support you received from your tutors and lecturers?

Really good, I liked how we had both theory and practical work, and also two lecturers that had different methods of teaching and how I had the opportunity to work with different wiring systems that I would not have been able to do at work.

Could you provide more information on what you have learned and any challenges you've had?

I have gained a lot of knowledge on different wiring and containment systems eg T&E, singles, plastic and metal conduit and where these systems are best suited for. I've also learned about the maths/physics behind electricity which will come in handy when doing an install job as I know how to calculate which size of cable I should use and other calculations that go along with it.

A challenge for me was doing the containment installations as I hadn’t done them at my work before, so it was a learning curve. I will be able to transfer a lot of the things I have learned in college over in to my work life.

Upon starting your course, did you have a clear idea of the career path you wanted to follow afterwards?

Yes, I want to become a qualified approved electrician and continue working in the trade.

Lastly, what advice would you give to those considering studying at UHI Moray?

Work hard and complete the course as best as you can.

If you are passionate about a job in construction our courses are ideal if you are a beginner or already working in the industry.
