Pathways to Start
You don’t need a business mind, just an open one!
Pathways to Start is a six-week fully funded programme offering tailored one-to-one and group training for those thinking about starting a business. Learning from experienced mentors you will grow confidence, learn to think like an entrepreneur and network with like-minded people.
Rachel Hunter, HIE’s Director of Enterprise and Community Support:
“Pathways to Start is about overcoming obstacles and inspiring more people into self-employment. It will provide them with the initial skills and confidence they need to take any ideas they may have and move towards starting a business, possibly becoming an employer and contributing to the wider economy.”

How it works
This 6-week fully funded programme runs one day a week and includes weekly mentoring sessions, giving you practical support and guidance to make those first steps in turning your ideas into a business.
- Learn from experienced mentors who’ve been where you are.
- Develop practical skills to plan, build, and manage your business.
- Join a supportive community of like-minded people.
- Get ongoing mentoring to guide your progress every week.
- Access a business support grant to help bring your dreams to life.
The programme supports people from historically underrepresented groups in business, such as women, young people, military veterans, rehabilitating offenders, carers and those with neurodiversity or physical disabilities.
This programme is funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by HIE with UHI Moray and CJM Lumina in Moray.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes:
“The Pathways to Start programme forms part of a £6 million investment the Scottish Government is investing in this year to tackle under-representation in our start-up community. I urge anyone who has ever considered starting or developing a business idea or company, or even those who might not have thought of themselves as an business owner, to find out how the programme can support them.”
How to apply
Please complete the online form to apply to take part in Pathways to Start.
Priority will be given to those who have not started a business. If more people apply than there are places available, places will be allocated in a fair way that gives everyone an equal chance. We're doing this to avoid any risk of discrimination and reduce the collection of sensitive data.
