Sustainable Style
Greener Hairdressing
We applied for the UHI Rebel Fund to help us in the salon to become more sustainability friendly, efficient and environmentally aware. Working to reduce waste, chemical bottles, foils, recycling hair clippings. We strive to conserve water and energy whilst lowering operational costs by being efficient. We want our clientele to know we are a reputable college salon and meet the consumer demand for eco-conscious business practises.
We were awarded £1800, with this we have bought Eco Taps, a refill station, recycling bins and bin for hair clippings, disposable towels, re-useable bottles, a label machine printer, and have liaised with a local business to design QR code mirror stickers that once scanned take you to this wonderful page!

Eco Tap Unboxing Funded by the UHI Rebel Fund
In this video, we’re unboxing our new eco taps before installation. These taps are fully recyclable and designed to deliver cleaner, softer water using natural antibacterial mineral crystals and ceramic balls contained within the tap head. Once fitted, they are expected to reduce water usage by up to 65% compared to standard shower heads. This unboxing gives a closer look at the product and its sustainability features before installation.

Biodegradable Disposable Towels
In this video we're showing the new eco taps and our biodegradable disposable towels.
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact while maintaining high standards of hygiene and client care. We use disposable, biodegradable towels which are a hygienic, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to traditional cotton towels.
These help significantly reduce laundry use while ensuring every client has a fresh, clean towel. We also have a range of recycling bins throughout the salon to minimise waste going to landfill.
These include:
- Paper and cardboard
- Plastic and cans
- General waste
- Hair
- Colouring tubes
Hair waste is collected separately, then taken away to be recycled and reused in sustainable ways, such as for gardening and environmental projects.
Reducing Waste and Encouraging Reuse
To further support sustainability, we have introduced a refill station for our products. Clients can purchase a reusable bottle and return it to be refilled at a lower cost. This helps reduce single-use plastic waste while also saving money.
We have also installed sustainability-themed mirror stickers throughout the salon. Each one includes a short quote and a QR code linking to this page, encouraging both clients and visitors to learn more about sustainable practices and take ideas home with them.
Student-Led Sustainability Project
These improvements have been made possible thanks to the hard work of our Level 5 hairdressing students. Over several months, they researched practical and cost-effective ways to make the salon more sustainable.
They then sourced the appropriate equipment and implemented these changes within the salon environment.
This project would not have been possible without the support and funding provided by The Rebel Fund.
This follows on from UHI Moray’s previous sustainability project Under the Scissors which you can read about at Research - Under the Scissors CEF Project
