Working for Scotland – Foundation Apprenticeships
As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with recent Foundation Apprenticeship graduate Lily shares her apprenticeship story.
Foundation Apprenticeships (FA) aim to give young people experience of the world of work and gain industry knowledge while still at school, this includes our Foundation Apprenticeship in Creative and Digital Media.
We caught up with recent FA graduate Lily to learn all about why she is grateful that she chose to study with us.
Upon starting your course, did you have a clear idea of the career path you wanted to follow after your FA?
I always knew I wanted to go to Gray’s School of Art, and going to UHI Moray really helped me gain more things to add to my portfolio to get in. I felt like I had so much more variety of work in my portfolio to get into art school in the end. Ranging from digital things from college to live drawing in my spare time.
What did you learn as part of the FA?
Year 1 was gaining the basic skills we needed to progress onto the second year which was work experience. I have more ideas of jobs I can go into after I leave art school, it’s painted to many different pictures and doorways I can go into. I also have so much knowledge in the Adobe programs now, which I use at university, so I’m able to help my peers if they need.
You mentioned work experience, where did you complete yours?
I helped work on Indie Game Squad’s 30 Days of Summer game jam. Making an interactive game, sprites and artwork, as well as a full social media campaign for the event.
Were you given any support during your studies?
I felt very supported the whole time during my studies. My lecturer, Andrew, always made sure we were okay, and would go over things with us individually if we didn’t understand. His instructions were always clear, to the point, and have even helped me so much now at university as I have to use the same Adobe programs here.
Lastly, what were the highlights of your time studying at UHI Moray?
I met friends for life who I am so thankful for, and I started participating in the Moray Game Jam where I’ve met so many incredible creative individuals. I will always be so eternally grateful that I chose to go to UHI.
