Stories with impact: Lucy Lintott Smith, Student
Lucy Lintott Smith is not only a dedicated student at UHI Moray but a national inspiration. Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at just 19, Lucy has spent the last decade defying expectations, raising over £200,000 for MND research, and proving that no obstacle is too great when met with courage, humour, and determination.
Lucy’s Story of Strength and Spirit
At just 19, Lucy was preparing to begin her studies in Business in Glasgow when she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, becoming one of the youngest people in the UK to receive such a diagnosis. Using the diagnoses for good she quickly became a well-known figure in her community and beyond, dedicating herself to raising awareness and funds for MND research.
Over the past 10 years, she has raised more than £200,000 for MND Scotland, including an incredible £21,020 from a charity ball she organised to mark a decade since her diagnosis.
Returning to Education
In 2024, she returned to education working toward her HND in Accounting with us. By then, she was a mother of two, and shortly before starting her second year, she welcomed her third child. Balancing motherhood, a full-time course, and the daily challenges of MND, Lucy’s resilience is nothing short of extraordinary.
A wheelchair user with limited to no use of her limbs, Lucy works with a scribe and carers to complete her studies. Despite these challenges, she passed all her HND assessments with flying colours, achieving A grades in her year-end exams.
Inspiration in Action
Lucy’s presence in the classroom is electric. Her infectious laugh, insightful questions, and unwavering positivity uplifts everyone around her. She motivates fellow students and lecturers alike, not just through her academic achievements, but through her attitude to life.
“If I ever have a day, I’m not feeling 100% and struggling to find motivation, I can honestly say that thinking of Lucy and seeing her turn up with her readiness to learn and cheeky personality makes you smile and motivates you to live life to the full.”
Driven by Purpose
Lucy is known as the “MND Warrior,” and it’s a title she wears with pride. Changing perceptions of what it means to live with MND her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the belief that no dream is out of reach.
Lucy is now taking a year out to focus on her family before returning to complete her BA (Hons) Accounting in 2026.
