Moray College UHI shortlisted for College Development Network Awards 2018

Following the success of the 2017 College Development Network (CDN) Awards where Moray College UHI won the Employer Connections Award for their work with the Hospitality industry across Moray, the college has now been nominated for 2 categories in the 2018 competition.

The College Development Network Awards, which run annually are open to all colleges in Scotland.  They recognise the talent, skills and achievements of colleges, their staff and learners, providing a valuable opportunity to celebrate the innovation taking place in colleges across the country.

The categories include: Health Promoting College and Student of the Year.

The subject of the Health Promoting College Award is based on the partnership between the college and the Moray Foodbank.  This innovative project was initially developed to support students of the college who were facing poverty and potentially mental health issues and poor physical health though a poor diet.   The project led to the development of a Community Larder allowing students to choose the foods they wanted, which would better suit their dietary requirements.  As the project progressed it also led to the involvement of a number of departments in the college including Hospitality students who offered free breakfast morning and lunches using ingredients from the Moray Food Hub.

The Student of the Year Award is BSc Integrative Healthcare degree student, Teresa Elliot who took on the challenge as part of her work placement to promote the benefits of integrative healthcare within GP surgeries to provide alternative treatments such as complementary therapies to reduce analgesia medicine bills. As a result of Teresa’s determination a pain management clinic was established in a local surgery aimed specifically at the effectiveness gaps in chronic pain treatment and management.

Jacqui Taylor, Head of Marketing and External Relations at Moray College UHI said: "The CDN Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate all of the good work being carried out by colleges across Scotland and highlights the achievements of students and staff as well as local communities. It is a real privilege to have been nominated for 2 categories which reflect the hard work and commitment of our staff, students and the wider community."

The winners will be announced on Thursday 25 October 2018.
