Jamie Scott named the 2026 James Smith Award winner
UHI Moray are delighted to announce that the 2026 recipient of the James Smith award is Jamie Scott who joined the institution in 2022. Now attending Lochpark three days a week and Out of The Darkness Theatre Company two days a week Jamie was a delight and inspiration to all who were part of his time at UHI Moray.
Jamie inspired by example. He put himself first, not his disability, and those around him saw that determination in everything he did. Watching him take on physically demanding challenges, knowing what they cost him, showed his classmates and staff what can be achieved with a positive attitude and a willingness to try.
Jamie was born with both physical and cognitive disabilities. He has cerebral palsy and encephalitis and at times needed to wear a leg brace, which he did not enjoy, yet he never complained. He also found most foods difficult to eat and followed a soft food diet, but this certainly didn't stop him enjoying his favourites, cake and ice cream.
His disability never stopped Jamie from living his life to the full. When Jamie first attended UHI Moray 4 years ago he wasn’t expected to be able to communicate with without his iPad. However from the outset, the iPad stayed in his bag and Jamie threw himself wholeheartedly into every subject and completed every task with a huge smile on his face and never let anything stand in his way.
There was nothing in life Jamie wouldn't try. He climbed Ladyhill with his class on numerous occasions and never once complained or said he couldn't manage it. He was runner-up in the Scottish touch rugby competition, and his achievement was recognised with the chance to meet some of his favourite players and a signed strip from the team.
His attendance at college was excellent and he both found and brought joy every day. He was so helpful to his classmates and staff, a truly beautiful heart wrapped up in a bundle of fun.
Within his class and the wider Skills For Life department, Jamie's impact was felt every day through his good humour, resilience and encouragement of those around him. He was liked very much by all of the students, and his willingness to get involved in everything, whatever the challenge, encouraged others to do the same. He was a positive ambassador for the college.
