Funding for Students with Families

Balancing education with family life can be challenging. Whether you're returning to study, pursuing a new qualification, or continuing your academic journey, we offer a range of funding options designed to support students who have children or other family responsibilities.

Childcare Support

We understand that childcare costs can be a barrier to education. That’s why we offer:

  • Further Education (FE) Childcare Fund
  • Higher Education (HE) Childcare Fund

These funds help cover registered childcare costs while you study. They’re means-tested, so you’ll need to provide details of your childcare arrangements and household income.

We will calculate funded childcare on timetabled classes, normally 3½ - 4 days per week. If you choose to contract for more childcare hours per week, you may be responsible for all additional childcare costs. Adjustments will be made for timetable changes and placements.

Discretionary Hardship Funds

Sometimes finances get tight. Our Discretionary Hardship Funds are here to help with rent and utilities costs with awards normally having a maximum amount payable of £4,000 per year.

Both FE and HE students can apply, and we’ll assess your application based on your individual circumstances.

FE Bursary

Available to those over the age of 16, The Further Education Bursary consists of:

  • EMA Away from Home Allowance
  • Study Allowance (for books, equipment and uniforms)
  • Living Costs Maintenance Allowance for students aged 18+
  • Travel Allowance (for those living out with Elgin)
  • Additional Support Needs Allowance (for assisted transport or specialised equipment on medical or disability grounds)

Support for Independent Students

Are you over 25 or financially independent from your parents? You may qualify for additional bursary support tailored to your situation.

SAAS Support for HE Students

For those in Higher Education, SAAS (Student Awards Agency Scotland) provides:

  • Tuition fee coverage
  • Bursaries
  • Student loans

SAAS support is based on your household income and study level, and it’s a vital resource for many of our students.

Our Student Services team is always ready to support you whether you need help understanding your options or completing your application.
