What’s a Foundation Apprenticeship?

FA student

Foundation Apprenticeships are a new approach to your education. They are normally studied over 2 years available from S5. You will study at college and work with an employer and when you complete a Foundation Apprenticeship you’ll have an industry-recognised qualification.

What’s more, the work experience you gain will really help in your future career, whatever you decide to do when you leave school.

A Foundation Apprenticeship will give you the skills to get a head start on your career path. Whether you’re planning to go college, university, gain fast track entry for a Modern Apprenticeship or go straight into employment.

What’s involved?

Foundation Apprenticeships typically takes two years to complete and can be taken alongside your other subject choices like National 5s and Highers. Most people enrol on a Foundation Apprenticeship when they enter S5, however it can be done over 1 year if you enter in S6.

As you work towards an industry recognised qualification you will spend time out of school at college studying for a National Progression Awards during year 1 and in year 2 you will work with a local employer 1 day a week undertaking part of an SVQ qualification.
