Sport and Fitness student selected for Scottish Student Sport Leadership Programme

A Sport and Fitness student from Moray College UHI has been selected for the 20-21 Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Leadership Programme.

Cailtin Duguid, BSc (Hons) Sport and Fitness student

Thirty-four students from Universities and Colleges across Scotland have successfully gained a spot on the programme, with the launch of the programme having kicked off on Thursday 22nd October.

Scottish Student Sport carefully selected students who showed commitment, motivation, and ambition to developing their leadership skills and who are determined to make a positive impact at their institution and within their region.

Delivered virtually over Zoom, the programme takes students through 10 weeks of “Mastermind” calls focussing on various aspects of leadership and employability.

Our 2nd year BSc (Hons) Sport and Fitness student, Cailtin Duguid, was one of the successful students to be selected:

What interested you in the SSS Leadership Programme?

To be considered for the programme, a person in authority had to recommend you. I received a recommendation from Emma Robson, HISA Activities Manager. Despite my outward confidence, I often find myself doubting my capabilities and as I would like to be a high school PE teacher or S&C Coach for a professional sports team, which requires confidence, assertiveness, and courage, I felt this programme would help me develop these traits and give me the tools to become a better coach and leader.

How have you found the experience so far?

I have loved every moment of the programme - it is very insightful, motivating, and inspiring. I have learnt a lot regarding positive leadership, role models and professionalism. This has really boosted my confidence and made me feel more secure in myself and my abilities.

What do you hope to gain from the programme?

I would like to come away from the programme with the tools and strategies to successfully lead, coach and develop a group of young people. I would also like to leave the programme with more self-confidence, positivity and assertiveness that can be applied to my everyday life and its difficulties. Studying the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Fitness has already given me so many opportunities and experiences that correlate perfectly with the programme content. This makes it easier to apply the strategies and tools we discuss in the programme in my sporting studies and current extracurricular activities.
