Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi, I’m Aimee! I’m 19 years old and I’m born and bred in Elgin.

Why did you decide to study an apprenticeship?

Whilst I was in 5th year at Elgin High School I had initially planned to go to university. However, after studying the Business Skills Foundation Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 6) in my 6th year it opened my eyes to the great amount of Modern Apprenticeships that were available in Moray. I began to quickly realise that University wasn’t for me, and that there were really good opportunities on my doorstep.

One of my lecturers told me about the Business and Administration Modern Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 5) vacancy with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Moray which I was successful in receiving. Without this opportunity I feel as if I would still be indecisive on what path I wanted to take into the world of work.

What did you like best about the apprenticeship?

I loved being able to experience going to college and having time out of school. My favourite part of the apprenticeship experience was the work placements. Every unit at college increased my knowledge and understanding, and gave me a better feel on what I enjoyed, and what I didn’t enjoy so much.

How did the apprenticeship prepare you for the world of work?

The apprenticeships gave me a good stepping stone into employment since I knew what was expected of me as an employee.
From these apprenticeships I’ve not only gained hands on experience, but I’ve now got a better understanding what it’s like to work in a business environment.

What do you do in your current employment?

After completing my Modern Apprenticeship, I secured employment as a full-time Employer and School Liaison Assistant with DYW Moray.
The job is really fun and varied, one day I could be organising an event for parents and the next day I could be networking with local businesses.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I’m a good baker, I love to make brownies.

What is your favourite type of food?

Definitely a roast dinner!

What is the best advice you ever received?

Two things come to mind! The first being to do what makes me happy and the second is that a foundation apprenticeship is a great opportunity to start your career.

Who or what inspires you?

Looking back on my progress so far inspires me to continue to do well.
