Men into early learning and childcare course starting Jan
Moray College UHI has teamed up with Moray Council to develop a new, fully-funded, Men in early learning and childcare (ELC) course, which starts on 16 January, as part of the Scottish Government’s expansion of early learning and childcare.
Moray College UHI has tailored the course specifically to suit the increase in ELC workforce required in Moray by 2020, and with a potential of up to 300 staff being recruited there’s never been a better time to consider a career in ELC.
Passing the 20 week course will give attendees a Skills for Work Level 5 qualification and an invitation to apply for the SVQ or HNC to continue their route into a career in early education.
Aimed at career changers and parents, the course runs until June with a blended approach of face-to-face learning once a week on Wednesdays between 6pm-9pm, online teaching and self-study. A placement is part of the course with Moray Council’s Scottish Government funded ELC expansion project covering the cost of Disclosure Scotland checks for successful course applicants.
With a view to diversifying the workforce in ELC, successful Men in Childcare courses have been running in Perth and Edinburgh for five years. Of those who have taken part in courses in the last three years nearly 80% of respondents to a final destination survey are now working in an ELC setting or continuing their training in the sector.
Having a positive male role model in a learning environment is one way the Scottish Government is looking to tackle the attainment gap, particularly amongst boys. A progressive career in ELC is a fantastic opportunity to play a part in shaping young lives.
