Social Services - Children and Young People (SCQF Level 7) SVQ

What is special about this course?

This SVQ allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work.


This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council to ensure relevance to the sector.


This SVQ is suitable for individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification. The target audience for this SVQ are people who are practitioners in early years settings and residential/daycare for children and young people.

It is a requirement by the Scottish Social Services Council that everyone employed in this capacity should be working towards achievement of this qualification.

This is a work based award to allow practitioners to meet the SSSC requirements.

Entry requirements

Entry is at the discretion of the college.  Candidates must be based in a workplace working at practitioner level.

The course consists of 4 mandatory units and 4 optional units.

• Develop Your Practice Through Reflection and Learning

• Promote The Safeguarding of Children and Young People

How will I study my course?

  • Work based

Work based: SVQs are undertaken by employees in their workplace environment. You will be assessed by observation, undertaking day to day tasks for which you are responsible.

The good news is that depending on your personal circumstances there are a wide range of bursaries, grants and allowances available to fund your college studies.


Students may be eligible for PTFG (part time fee grant)

What can I do on completion of my course?

Candidates may transfer across to the adult sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare. The progression route for each candidate will depend on their job role and level of responsibility.
