Social Services & Healthcare (SCQF Level 7) SVQ

What is special about this course?

This SVQ allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work. This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council: Skills for Care and Development to ensure relevance to the sector. This SVQ is suitable for individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification and/or people who are employed in the health and social care sector in a supervisory role. The target audience for this SVQ are people who are practitioners in care services for adults. It is a requirement by the SSSC that everyone employed in this capacity should be working towards achievement of this qualification.

Entry requirements

Entry is at the discretion of the college.  Candidate must be based in a workplace at key worker level.


The course consists of 4 mandatory units and 4 optional units.


Mandatory units:

• Promote Effective Communication

• Promote Health, Safety and Security in the Work Setting

• Develop Your Practice Through Reflection and Learning

• Promote the Safeguarding of Individuals

How will I study my course?

  • Work based

Work based: SVQs are undertaken by employees in their workplace environment. You will be assessed by observation, undertaking day to day tasks for which you are responsible.

The good news is that depending on your personal circumstances there are a wide range of bursaries, grants and allowances available to fund your college studies.


 Students may be eligible for PTFG (part time fee grant)

What can I do on completion of my course?

Competence based award to meet SSSC requirements.

Candidates can progress to other appropriate SVQs up to and including SCQF Level 9 (formerly SVQ Level 4).

The progression route for each candidate will depend on their job role and level of responsibility.
