What is special about this course?

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) combine work with study, so you can gain a recognised qualification without having to study full time. 

Focusing on developing your existing knowledge and practical skills in safe, person-centred care, you'll build the confidence take on greater responsibility in your workplace. You'll also deepen your ability to communicate effectively, support individuals with their wellbeing, and reflect on your practice to improve the quality of care you deliver.

With the guidance of an assessor, you'll use you will use your day-to-day responsibilities as a demonstration of knowledge and competence, building a portfolio that reflects what you can do in practice.

Completion of this qualification also meets the requirements set by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) for those working in care settings, supporting your continued employment and future progression.

You should already have a valid PVG Scheme membership through your workplace before commencing this course.

 

You will cover key areas that support safe, effective practice, including:

Mandatory units:

  • Promote Effective Communication
  • Promote Health, Safety and Security in the Work Setting
  • Develop Your Practice Through Reflection and Learning
  • Promote the Safeguarding of Individuals

You will also choose 4 optional units of your choice.

The key element of the SVQ is to build a portfolio of evidence using real life examples from your workplace.

This course is work based where you will work towards a nationally recognised qualification while working as an employee, with support from UHI Moray.

How long will my course last?

18 Months

This course can be studied both as a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) or a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ). The key element of a MA programme is the work-based SVQ units combined with five core skills, whilst SVQs can be studied as stand-alone courses, outwith the MA programme.
