What is special about this course?

This 3-hour course is an ideal introduction for those looking to gain an understanding as to the purpose, basic concepts and processes of counselling including reflective practice. 

With study tailored to your needs this course provides underpinning and basic knowledge of the subject.

Entry requirements

No specific entry requirements.

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Investigate the aims and purpose of counselling.
  • Describe the counselling process.
  • Participate in a role play activity to counsel a client.
  • Review and evaluate own counselling skills.

You will apply a wide range of counselling skills developing your practical skills.

This course is delivered face-to-face on campus supplemented with our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

If you are studying part time and are on low income or in receipt of certain benefits your course fees may be covered by a fee waiver.

If you are not Ordinarily Resident in Scotland, you may need to pay course fees.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On completion of this programme you can progress onto further study which may include:

  • COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills (CPD Award) (SCQF Level 8)
  • HNC in Counselling (with additional qualifications)
  • HND Counselling* (with HNC qualification)

*Graduation from the HND Counselling programmes allows you to practice as a Professional Counsellor. From there you will have opportunities in a variety of areas such as:

  • Own Practice and Self-employment 
  • Local organisations 
  • Health Services 
  • Education Services 
  • Charity and Volunteer Sector
