Foundation and Current Barbering (College Certificate) SCQF Level 5/6

What is special about this course?

Barbering is an exciting and everchanging industry. This unique course has been designed to equip you with up-to-date techniques to enable you to develop your barbering knowledge and put your skills into practice in our commercial salon.

Throughout the course you will have the time to learn and progress your skills to enable you to become a fully qualified barber.

You will begin the course studying SCQF Level 5 modules before progressing in semester 2 onto SCQF Level 6 modules, allowing you to naturally advance.

Entry requirements

Three National 4s, one of which must be English

or

satisfactory attainment of Introduction to Foundation Hairdressing (SCQF Level 4) or Access to Hairdressing and Beauty Therapies (SCQF Level 4).

You must attend a Course Information Event held prior to the course commencing.

Course content includes:

Semester 1:

  • Consultation in Barbering
  • Shampoo and Condition Men’s Hair
  • Products and Styling for Men
  • Men’s Hair Cutting including Detailing and Facial Hair
  • Create Movement & Texture within the Hair
  • Wellbeing & Mindfulness
  • Health & Hygiene
  • Core skills – Numeracy, ICT, Communication

Semester 2:

  • Client Consultation
  • Specialised Hair & Scalp Treatments
  • Facial Hair Including Beard Designs
  • Male Grooming & Facial Massage
  • Advanced Gents Cutting
  • Colour Men’s Hair
  • Wellbeing & Mindfulness

You will also learn important core skills including Problem Solving and Working with Others.

Equipment

You will be required to purchase a kit and uniform for this course (kit approx. £563.15, uniform approx. £139.18 for tops, trousers, apron, and shoes). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered.

This is a practical based course with face-to-face practical classes on campus supplemented with our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) on Brightspace.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course, you may:

  • Gain employment as an Improver Barber within a salon or on a self-employed basis.
  • Progress onto further study such as the Foundation Hairdressing (SCQF Level 5) course.
