What is special about this course?

This PDA in Advanced Manufacturing (SCQF level 7) has been designed to address and close the current skills gap in the manufacturing workforce, as set out in the sector's Skills Investment Plans. Manufacture is a key priority for Scotland, involving a range of industrial sectors, so this PDA is ideal for any individual or business that is involved in Manufacturing and Processing industries.

The structure of the course takes into account the national manufacturing agenda, driven by the Manufacturing Action Plan, the Scottish Government's initiative to create ‘A Manufacturing Future for Scotland’. At the route of these developments is the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where technology and advanced manufacture will play a key role in the future of manufacturing. Based on industry and education predictions and forecasting, there is a clear need for a workforce that can adjust to and develop advanced technologies such as 3D modelling. This course will provide you with the skills needed to engage with these innovations and become part of Scotland's future.

  • Develop skills required by employers across a range of employment situations
  • Gain vocational skills and knowledge within advanced manufacturing, such as new and emerging advanced manufacturing technologies, 3D printing, and scanning technologies

Entry requirements

  • 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above OR 
  • 1 A level at grade D or above 
  • The above should be in a relevant subject such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Systems, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • PLUS National 5 passes or equivalent in Maths, English, and a Science

Alternatively: 

  • NC or HNC in a related discipline, such as: Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Engineering Systems; Manufacturing Engineering; or Measurement and Control Engineering
  • SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) in an Engineering discipline, such as Mechanical, Manufacturing or Electrical Engineering
  • Mature learners with suitable relevant work experience may be accepted for entry, or advanced entry

Year 1 - PDA

Core modules will include:

  • Advanced manufacturing technologies
  • CAD: 3D printing and scanning
  • Internet of things

You will also study 1 of the following optional modules:

  • Robotic systems
  • Artificial intelligence

How will I study my course?

  • Part-time (structured)
  • You will learn through a combination of lectures and tutorials, and online study via the university's virtual learning environment (VLE), with support from your tutors

How long will my course last?

  • Part-time (structured): 1 semester (2 days per week @ 4 hours per day)
  • Part-time (structured): 2 semesters (1 day per week @ 4 hours per day)
