What is special about this course?

Apprenticeships combine work with study, so you can earn while you learn. It is an exciting way of gaining a recognised qualification that will help to start your career without having to study full time.

This work-based qualification is designed for healthcare support workers who want to build confidence and develop their existing skills. With a mix of mandatory and optional units, you can tailor your learning to suit your role and supports your career goals.

Focusing on practice within your workplace setting, you'll develop a deeper understanding of how to work safely and professionally in a healthcare environment. You'll also explore how to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, follow health and safety procedures, and support a range of clinical tasks within your role. 

With the guidance of an assessor, you'll use you will use your day-to-day responsibilities as a demonstration of knowledge and competence, building a portfolio that reflects what you can do in practice.

This Apprenticeship has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council: Skills for Care and Development.

You should be in paid employment where you are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow you to gather the required evidence to achieve the qualification.

You should already have a valid PVG Scheme membership through your workplace before commencing this course.

You will cover key areas that support safe, effective practice in a healthcare environment alongside core skills.

Mandatory units:

  • Promote effective communication in a healthcare environment
  • Maintain health, safety and security practices within a health setting
  • Develop your practice through reflection and learning

You will also choose 5 optional units of your choice.

The key element of the SVQ is to build a portfolio of evidence using real life examples from your workplace.

This course is work based where you will train towards a nationally recognised qualification while working as an employee, with support from UHI Moray.

How long will my course last?

18 Months

This course can be studied both as a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) or a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ). The key element of a MA programme is the work-based SVQ units combined with five core skills, whilst SVQs can be studied as stand-alone courses, outwith the MA programme.
