What is special about this course?

We live in a communications-driven society and this qualification will enable you to flourish as you improve and develop your skills in all aspects of English.

This course is designed to enhance your language abilities and critical understanding through close reading of complex written materials and the study of great literary works from various cultures.

You will gain exceptional expertise in understanding, evaluation, comparison and analysis.

Designed to fit around the needs of our students, this course offers you the opportunity to study the online elements flexibly at a time that suit you with regular sessions for speaking directly to your lecturer either remotely or in the classroom.

Entry requirements

• National 5 in English or equivalent.
• Applications are encouraged from prospective students without the standard entry requirements as listed above.

Course content includes:

• Language Study: 

  By focussing on two key areas close reading and writing. The close reading element will extend your understanding of passages and develop your ability to analyse the writer's style where you will evaluate passages by citing evidence in support of your comments.  In the writing element you will be given the opportunity to write in a variety of genre and to extend your skills stylistically and technically.

• Literary Study: 

  You will study prose, poetry and drama and will be introduced to a range of critical concepts and terms.  You will also learn new skills in critical essay writing.

Fees

Normally, if you are studying full time for the first time and are Ordinarily Resident in Scotland your course fees will be covered through the information you provide on your course application.

If you are studying part time and are on low income or in receipt of certain benefits your course fees may be covered by a fee waiver.

If you are not Ordinarily Resident in Scotland, you may need to pay course fees.
