Hairdressing (SCQF Level 5) SVQ

What is special about this course?

Scottish Vocational Qualifications are an exciting way of gaining a recognised whilst working, helping to start your career without having to study full time. 

This course will provide you with a firm foundation for building the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in hairdressing, whether your interest lies in traditional hairdressing or a more specialised career choice.  

A qualification in hairdressing opens you up to a wide range of opportunities from salon stylist, film and TV work, lecturer or trainer, the wedding industry, freelance work or salon manager. 

We can tailor the frameworks to fit different job roles.

 

Entry requirements

  • 3 National 4s (including English) OR 
  • SVQ in Hairdressing and Barbering at SCQF Level 4 OR 
  • SCQF Level 4 course

You should be in a job or placement where you are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow you to gather the required evidence to achieve the qualification.

Course content includes: 

  • Style and Finish Hair 
  • Set and Dress Hair 
  • Cut Hair Using Basic Techniques 
  • Colour and Lighten Hair 
  • Advise and Consult with Clients 
  • Shampoo, Condition and Treat Hair and Scalp 
  • Develop and Maintain Your Effectiveness at Work 
  • Plait and Twist Hair 
  • Fulfil Salon Reception Duties 
  • Communication 
  • Numeracy 
  • Information Communication Technology 
  • Problem Solving 
  • Working with Others 

The key element of the SVQ is to build a portfolio of evidence from your practice in your workplace.

Equipment

You will be required to purchase a kit for this course (approx. £389.87). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered. 

Equipment required includes: 

  • Hairdressing toolkit 
  • Cutting kit 
  • Textbook 

The training manager will order all equipment on your behalf.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time
  • Day release

This course is work based where you will train towards a nationally recognised qualification while working as an employee, with support from UHI Moray.  

While we operate a commercial salon, you are encouraged to find your own clients where possible to meet the specific requirements of the portfolio.

Fees

If studying the Modern Apprenticeship route, in most cases course fees will be covered.

If studying the SVQ route, there are funding options available which vary depending on your specific circumstances. Please contact your training provider for further information.

Funding

Funding from Skills Development Scotland  to contribute towards the cost of the apprentices training under the Modern Apprenticeship programme is available for all young people aged 16 – 19 for all frameworks. Funding may also be available for young people between the ages of 20 – 24 and 25+. This is dependent on the frameworks and sectors and can change annually.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may be able to: 

  • gain full time employment within the industry 
  • progress onto further study such as a SCQF Level 6 in Hairdressing or Barbering
