What is special about this course?

The University of Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to develop an extensive portfolio of visual work for application to degree programmes across the UK, including BA (Hons) Fine Art and HNC Visual Communication at Moray School of Art.

You will develop skills in a number of disciplines including life drawing, digital and dark room photography, painting, digital imaging, sculpture and 2D & 3D design.

You will also develop critical and analytical skills through research into the work of other artists with opportunities to attend visiting artist’s talks and gallery visits.

You will have the freedom to decide on the specific focus for their projects and portfolio.

Entry requirements

Four National 5s 2 at A or B (one of which must be Art) and two at A - D

or

UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design (SCQF 5).

English or Communication subject required.

You will be required to attend an interview where individual competence in art will be considered.

Course content includes:

  • Introduction to visual language in art and design

  • Introduction to research skills in art and design

  • Introduction to critical and contextual awareness in art and design

  • Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design

  • An integrated approach to 2D problem solving in art and design

  • An integrated approach to 3D problem solving in art and design

  • An integrated approach to time-based problem solving

  • Developing an art and design project

  • Opportunities for progression in art and design

Equipment

If you qualify for a bursary you will be given a starter materials pack. These packs are also available to buy on site, as well as other materials from our small shop.

How will I study my course?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Our priority is to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff. We will continue to review government guidance as lockdown measures shift over the next few months and will inform you of any further changes to the information provided below about your course. You will study the course through our blended learning approach. In semester one, September 2020, the theory elements will be delivered mainly online through a combination of video conference seminars, tutor-supported study and self-directed study using the university's virtual learning environment. You will also have the opportunity to do an online induction at the start of the course. On-campus activities, practical sessions and placements will be introduced in line with the developing Scottish Government public health measures and guidance, including social distancing.

This is a practical based course with face-to-face teaching supported by the use of the VLE.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may progress on to HNC Visual Communication or BA (Hons) Fine Art at Moray School of Art.  Entry to degree courses is by selection based on the strengths of your portfolio produced and your academic qualifications.
