Applied Sciences (Access) SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of scientific principles and practice to proceed to a science-based course at Higher National or degree level. It provides students with a National Certificate group award but is based on the Higher Cfe National Qualifications. As part of this course you can sit Higher Chemistry, Higher Environmental Science and Higher Biology or Human Biology (which can also be studied online).
There are also opportunities for students to study one or more Higher science subjects on an infill basis.

Entry requirements

4 Standard Grades, 2 Credit (one of which must be Chemistry) and 2 General


4 National 5s, 2 at A or B (one of which must be Chemistry) and 2 at A-D


satisfactory attainment of a prerequisite SCQF Level 5 course or


Applications are encouraged from mature students who do not possess formal qualifications but have the skills to meet the academic demands of the course.

Subject areas include:

• Higher Chemistry

• Higher Biology/Higher Human Biology

• Higher Environmental Science

• Maths for Science

• National 5 Physics (1 unit)


Basic equipment requirements are -

  • Safety Glasses and scientific calculator.
  • Course text books are also required.

Some students may be eligible for funding to purchase this equipment and we recommend students wait for the start of term before purchasing items.

How will I study my course?

The course contains a mix of practical work and theoretical study.  Many of the theoretical elements are delivered through the use of practical experiments.

The Higher units are assessed using the NABs (National Assessment Bank material).  In other parts of the course we use a variety of methods to assess your progress and learning.  These range from short answer & multi choice questions, reports & projects, observations and items of extended writing and research.

It is possible to sit the Higher Science exams on this course.

How long will my course last?

Full time - 1 year.
Part time - 2 years or more.

What can I do on completion of my course?

Further study may include HNC Applied Sciences, BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, BSc (Hons) Bioscience and BSc (Hons) Archaeology and Environmental Studies at Moray College UHI.   Entry may also be possible onto other UHI degrees including BSc Marine Science and BSc Health Studies

The qualification may act as a guaranteed entry into science faculties at some Scottish universities and to many English universities by negotiation.
