What is special about this course?

This course is designed to provide you with a firm foundation for building the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in hairdressing.

The course content provides foundation training including basic cutting and colouring which are the key units required within the hairdressing industry.

This is a practical hand on course providing you with the basic practical skills within a commercial salon to enter the industry at Junior Stylist level or progress to SVQ in Hairdressing (SCQF Level 6).

You must have an ability and willingness to communicate with people to be successful in the hairdressing industry.

Entry requirements

Three National 4s, one of which must be English
satisfactory attainment of Introduction to Foundation Hairdressing (SCQF Level 4).
You must attend a Course Information Event held prior to the course commencing.

Course content includes:
• Shampoo, Condition and Treat the Hair and Scalp
• Applying Practical Skills
• Current Blow-Drying Techniques
• Ladies Hairdressing; Basic Cutting Techniques
• Mix, Apply & Remove Hair Colour
• Advise and Consult with Clients
• Hair Colour and Lighten
• Work Placement
• Coping Strategies and Building Resilience
• Core Skills: Numeracy, Communication and Information and Communication Technology


Equipment required includes:
• A uniform (tunic, trousers and shoes)
• Hairdressing Tool Kit
• Cutting Kit and text book

Order forms are sent out to successful applicants and costs may be included within the bursary which you must apply for separately.

How will I study my course?

Our priority is to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff. We will continue to review government guidance as lockdown measures shift over the next few months and will inform you of any further changes to the information provided below about your course. You will study the course through our blended learning approach. In semester one, September 2020, the theory elements will be delivered mainly online through a combination of video conference seminars, tutor-supported study and self-directed study using the university's virtual learning environment. You will also have the opportunity to do an online induction at the start of the course. On-campus activities, practical sessions and placements will be introduced in line with the developing Scottish Government public health measures and guidance, including social distancing.

Teaching will consist of face-to-face and online activities including virtual classrooms.

While the hairdressing department operates three commercial salons, you are encouraged to find your own clients where possible to meet the specific requirements of the portfolio.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may progress onto SVQ in Hairdressing (SCQF Level 6).
Alternatively, you can enter employment within the hairdressing industry as a Junior Stylist.
