Applied Sciences SCQF Level 5

What is special about this course?

Applied Sciences (Level 5) is an academic and practical based course which gives you the knowledge and skills for various science topics. This course is designed to introduce a student with no science background and give them the knowledge and skill set to progress further through education and/or employment. Completion of the course will allow you to progress to Applied Sciences (Access - SCQF Level 6), with which you have the opportunity to sit Highers in Science based subjects.
There are also opportunities for students to study one or more National 5 science subjects on an infill basis.

Entry requirements

3 National 4s, one of which must be Maths
or
satisfactory attainment of a SCQF Level 4 course which includes Maths or Numeracy.

Applications are encouraged from mature students who do not possess formal qualifications but have the skills to meet the academic demands of the course.

• National 5 Chemistry

• National 5 Biology

• National 5 Environmental Science

• National 5 Physics (1 unit)

National 5 Skills for Work: Laboratory Science is also part of this award and its provides a broad introduction to laboratory science. Learners will explore a variety of industries and services, and career opportunities in science laboratories locally, nationally and globally.

They will develop the basic practical skills and knowledge needed for working in a laboratory: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions; and health and safety requirements. Practical skills in microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation will be developed.

The course contains a mix of practical work and theoretical study. Many of the theoretical elements are delivered through the use of practical experiments.
