Practical Science

What is special about this course?

Practical Science (SCQF Level 5) is an academic and practical based course which gives you the knowledge and skills on various Science topics such as Biology, Chemistry, Human Body, Forensics and Environmental Science.

This course is designed to introduce a student with no science background and give them the knowledge and skill set to progress further through education and/or employment in a lab. Completion of the course will allow you to progress to a SCQF Level 6 Science course.

As part of the course you will have the opportunity to attend field trips including visits to local distilleries and a hospital as well as engage with employers.

Special features:

  •     You will study a wide range of Science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Anatomy
  •     You will take part in forensic practicals as well as a variety of Biology and Chemistry practicals
  •     Completion of this course allows progression into higher level courses (Highers, HNC and Degree) or into employment
  •     This course is graded by continual assessment, therefore there are no exams

Entry requirements

3 National 4s, one of which must be Maths
satisfactory attainment of a SCQF Level 4 course which includes Maths or Numeracy.

Applications are encouraged from mature students who do not possess formal qualifications but have the skills to meet the academic demands of the course.

Course units include:

  •     Biology units
  •     Chemistry units
  •     Human body unit
  •     Environmental Science unit
  •     Practical lab units
  •     Forensic science unit

Plus core skills of IT, Numeracy and Communications.

You will also investigate careers in Science.

The course contains a mix of practical work and theoretical study. Many of the theoretical elements are delivered through the use of practical experiments.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may progress onto a Science course at SCQF Level 6 or into a range of Highers.

You can also enter employment working in a lab at a distillery or look for Modern Apprenticeship opportunities.
